Life in Benahavís

Benahavís is a mountain municipality between Marbella, Estepona and Ronda, with the village centre 7 km from the coast and no shoreline of its own. It sits on the southern face of the Serranía de Ronda and is crossed by the Guadalmina, Guadaiza and Guadalmansa rivers. Arabs founded the village at the end of the 11th century, and the ruin of the Montemayor castle still watches from the hill above it, with views of the coast.

Locals call it La Sartén de Andalucía, for the many restaurants serving traditional Andalusian dishes. The Las Angosturas gorge, on the Guadalmina near the village, is a place for river walking and beginner canyoning.

Golf is a second pillar of the area: one Andalucía Golf article counts 11 courses at 8 clubs, among them La Quinta, with three nine-hole courses by Manuel Piñero, and La Zagaleta, a private club with an 18-hole, par 72 course by Bradford Benz. The Feria begins in mid-August and lasts five days, and the Romería de la Virgen del Rosario takes place on 7 October.
