LIV Golf Andalucía at Valderrama: Four Days in Sotogrande

By Dmitry Mateshin, Founder

The fourth LIV Golf Andalucía ended with a home-soil duel and a defended team title. What happened at Real Club Valderrama, and why the event suits this coast.

For four days in early June, the quiet corner of the coast around Sotogrande turns into one of the busiest addresses in professional golf. LIV Golf Andalucía returned to Real Club Valderrama for a fourth consecutive year, and the finish gave the Spanish crowd what it came for: Jon Rahm in the final group, chasing, with the trophy decided only on the closing holes.

  1. What happened at Valderrama

The 2026 edition ran from 4 to 7 June, Thursday to Sunday, over four rounds. England's Tyrrell Hatton won at 11 under par, with rounds of 67, 69, 67 and 70. He began the last day two shots clear and finished two clear of Rahm, who closed with a 67, the best round of the final day, to finish second at 9 under. Abraham Ancer took third at 8 under.

The team competition belonged to Legion XIII, the side of Rahm, Hatton, Tom McKibbin and Caleb Surratt. They started the final day eight shots behind, finished at 7 under, and won by six over 4Aces GC, defending the title they won here in 2025.

Valderrama has now produced three different champions in four years of the event: Talor Gooch won in 2023 and again in 2025, and Sergio Garcia won in 2024, before Hatton's win this June.

  2. The course behind the event

Real Club Valderrama sits in San Roque, in the province of Cádiz, close to Sotogrande. It is a par 71 of about 7,010 yards, designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened in 1974, and it is surrounded by cork oak woodland. It hosted the Ryder Cup in 1997.

Reports from the week describe a course that rewards precision more than power and asks for command of every part of the game. That is part of its appeal for a tour event: the layout is narrow and demanding, and it does not give up low scores easily.

  3. What the week looks like from the grounds

The organiser sold three kinds of tickets: a grounds pass, hospitality packages in the Club 54 area, and a Super Monday pro-am. Tickets were digital, entry was cashless, and children aged 12 and under could enter free of charge with an accompanying adult on the grounds pass. For anyone living nearby, that meant an event you could simply walk into for an afternoon, rather than a trip planned around flights.

  4. Why events like this make the area a good place to live

Few places can host a tournament of this level and still feel like a village by the sea. That combination is what draws people to the western Costa del Sol: a concentration of golf courses within a short drive, a marina, and a climate that keeps outdoor life going through most of the year. A world-class event at Valderrama is one visible sign of a coast that is lived in as much as it is visited.

For a buyer, the appeal is practical as much as aspirational. You live a few minutes from a course of international standing, within reach of Sotogrande, San Roque, Manilva, Casares and Estepona, each with its own character: large plots among cork oaks, apartments with sea views, townhouses inside gated communities. Whether you plan to be here for the golf season, the whole year, or a few weeks around events like this one, the same questions decide the purchase: which area suits how you will use the home, how far it is from the airport and the courses, and what the community fees and annual costs are. Our guide to buying property on the Costa del Sol covers the process and the checks, and price per m² by town shows how the neighbouring towns compare.
